Liposuction – The Most Popular Aesthetic Surgery

Why do people strive to acquire the perfect body? Is it only about the looks? No! People associate a fit body with being healthy (of course, looking great while at it doesn’t hurt!). That’s what makes liposuction such a common aesthetic surgery treatment. It allows you to achieve a perfect contour while getting rid of unwanted fat that hurts both your self-esteem and the overall condition of your organism.

About Liposuction

Despite its popularity, many people are still confused about some of the details of the liposuction procedure. Here is what you need to know before undergoing the surgery:

  • Requirements – for liposuction, you need to have stable body weight. Being morbidly obese is a serious contraindication. Furthermore, a person willing to undergo liposuction should not have cardiopulmonary issues.
  • Anaesthesia – liposuction is performed under local, regional or general anaesthesia.
  • How – after performing some really small skin incisions, your surgeon will suck out unwanted fat from between your skin and muscles with the use of metal tubes called cannulas. Cuts are made in concealed areas to minimise the visual evidence of the operation.
  • Technique – these days, there are many approaches to getting rid of unwanted fat – from laser and frequency vibration energy to ultrasound waves. Manual liposuction still remains, however, the most common technique.

After Liposuction

Many potential patients are afraid of the period following the liposuction. Needlessly so! What you can expect is typically a small amount of pain afterwards, but nothing that can’t be controlled with medications. Other than that, there is swelling that subsides in around 3 weeks. Of course, this can vary from patient to patient. You will be required to wear a tight pressure garment for about three months following the surgery.

Liposuction’s Downtime and Aftercare

Prior to liposuction surgery, the patient shouldn’t be on any medication which makes the blood thin. Homeopathic medication is also off-limits. It is generally advised to cease the use of alcohol and tobacco at least four weeks before the procedure.

Following the liposuction, the patient is ready to resume most daily household activities the next after the surgery and to resume working within two or three days. Heavy activities can be resumed about one or one and a half month following the procedure, without any special aftercare.

Possible Side Effects of Liposuction

As is the case with any surgery, liposuction can lead to a few complications – most of them, however, are temporary. This includes collection of blood or fluid below the skin, bruising, excessive pain, infection, numbness, hyperpigmentation. In some rare situations, more serious complications can occur, which include perforation of abdominal organs, drug toxicity and cardiopulmonary problems.

Liposuction Results

As long as the patient follows and upkeeps a healthy lifestyle, the results of liposuction are long-lasting. It is advised that the patient works out regularly, keeps a healthy diet and tries to stay in good shape. The bottom line is, liposuction can be a great jump-start to change your lifestyle for the better and enjoy your great body for years to come!
