What is an Abdominoplasty
The surgical procedure is designed to enhance your abdominal region by removing unwanted fat, saggy, loose skin, and sometimes correcting muscle separation (Diastasis Recti), resulting in a tighter and more toned tummy.
Types of Abdominoplasty
The Mini Tummy Tuck
The surgery targets the lower region of the abdomen, and it’s considered to be a less invasive procedure than the full, as the mini tummy tuck incision is smaller and the recovery process (usually) is shorter. It was designed to shape and contour the abdomen by tightening the lax tissue below the belly button. It’s a great alternative to the full procedure if the individual needs a small amount of loose skin and fatty tissues removed and has not experienced a separated abdominal wall post-pregnancy.
The surgical procedure begins with a small incision similar to that of a c-section, placed immediately above the pubic line. The scaring is smaller than the full procedure, and it’s concealed just below the bikini line.
Full Tummy Tuck
The Full Tummy Tuck targets both above and below the belly button. The procedure is suited to individuals that have experienced significant weight loss, women experiencing Diastasis Recti (muscle separation) and loose skin after pregnancy or loose skin due to weight loss and/or age.
The tummy tuck scar reaches from hip to hip and then a second incision is made around the belly button to free the area from the surrounding tissue.
Although the incision is larger than the mini, the procedure can achieve greater results depending on the individual’s circumstance and body shape.
Are you a candidate
People that are thinking of undergoing the procedure are often unhappy with extra tissue below the belly button.
It can happen for a number of reasons; whether it’s because of pregnancy, recent weight loss, or natural build due to age.
If the Mini or Full Tummy Tuck surgery is something you might be interested in, there are a few contributing factors involved in ensuring the best results during and post-surgery. The ideal candidate is in overall good health, including a healthy diet and regular exercise, a non-smoker and in a positive mindset going into the surgery.
Women that are looking to get their body back into shape after pregnancy may be interested in the Mummy Makeover. Cosmetic avenue’s Mummy Makeover involves a range of procedures catered to the individual’s situation, including an abdominoplasty with a breast augmentation and/or breast lift.
Liposuction and Tummy Tuck
Many patients combine their Tummy Tuck with a liposuction procedure to reshape a specific area of their body, such as love handles and abdominal fat.
The reason for combining these procedures is to help contour the waist and remove fat from the entire abdomen, fundamentally reshaping the tummy with a more aesthetically pleasing contour.
Unlike the Tummy Tuck, liposuction requires several small incisions, which are used as entry points to extract fat with a cannula. When performed in conjunction with a Tummy Tuck, it is completed together, to avoid multiple surgeries.
Our clients’ incredible results
The time taken to recover before returning to work or other daily activities, such as driving, often varies from patient to patient, and will depend on the type of Tummy Tuck procedure you have, as well as the type of work undertaken.
Typically most patients find they can return to work 2-3 weeks following surgery. If your work is physically demanding, it may take longer before you are able to return. If possible, allow 4 to 6 weeks of adequate healing time before resuming certain activities.
TIP: Surgery advice is individualised. Your chosen Plastic Surgeon will be able to give you personalised advice on when you can return to work and other daily activities.
Most commonly, for a Full Tummy Tuck, a long incision is made from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. A second incision is made around the belly button to free the area from the surrounding tissue.
The Mini Tummy Tuck scar is much smaller than that of the traditional Tummy Tuck. The scar can be easily concealed under clothing, and will also fade and reduce in appearance over time.
Absolutely. A Tummy Tuck is also often combined with other body contouring surgeries such as a breast procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction for a complete “mummy makeover.” This means less overall expense, less time in hospital and less time recovering than from separate operations.
Liposuction is often combined with a tummy tuck to help refine the contour of the stomach, flanks and other areas.
